Welcome to Living Outside the Zoo!
This is the journey of one family, determined to escape the “ZOO” of life…a life lived for material things, where ‘wanting more’ and ‘needing more’ outweigh the need to ‘experience more.’
We’re a family in search of ‘something” more!
We are the Jakobys…
And this is our life Outside the Zoo!

I was a perfectly happy 4th grader in a bi-lingual Spanish school until my parents decided to drag me through Mexico! Now I’m riding horses, surfing in Mexican beach towns and on the constant search for better WIFI.

Traveling through Central America @ age 15, aka, 105 in human years, while my family tries to “find themselves.” I could have told them where they were all along. I protect them at all security check points from those guys with the guns. Even with an assult rifle, they are no match for my bad breath!
Living More with Less
Our current journey in 2019-2020 takes us from our comfortable lives in Dillon, Colorado, through the countries of Mexico and Central America. It’s taken two years of saving and downsizing, and months of purging all the needless things in our lives, to find our freedom Outside the Zoo and live our best lives!

Our “ZOO” may have a different meaning than yours, but our mission is simple:
Abandon a life focused on the search of “things” for one focused on the search of “experience.”
What will you find here?
Well, probably a lot of questionable humor as we make our way through this process; definitely a lot of mistakes as we figure out what we’re really doing, and hopefully some good ideas you can utilize to make some positive changes in your life.
We’ll hope you’ll join us on our journey, learn from our mistakes, be inspired by our stories and maybe even find your own meaning to life “Outside the Zoo.”
