Hi there, I’m Gregg.
Designer extraordinaire.
Those that know me well are probably not too surprised to hear that I am planning an extravagant adventure with my family. But they may wonder how we came up with the idea to pack up and travel through Central America. I believe it all started many years ago when Shannon and I were working in the British Virgin Islands in the sailing and S.C.U.B.A dive industry. This was before we were married and any kids. We were teaching twin 11-year old’s to SCUBA dive who were traveling from England to Australia via a 45-foot catamaran sailboat. The kids were excited to learn how to dive and to dive an 1800’s shipwreck called the R.M.S. Rhone. But they were mostly excited because they had a break from homeschooling with Mom. The two of them told grand stories of catching el dorado, navigating among the stars, and learning about volcanoes in their studies while they sail by Montserrat erupting. Both Shannon and I were so impressed by their depth of knowledge and life experiences that we looked at each other and said if we ever have kids we are going to do something like this one day!!
So why Central America? Well, Noah is in a Spanish immersion school and we wanted to continue with that education. It is easily accessible and from our past experiences the people are hospitable and it is safe. So we got the area down, now what will be our mode of transportation? Often people ask me with your sailing background why not a sailing adventure? Well, our plan is to sell both of our cars and pop-up camper. We figure that will give us a budget of about $28,000 for our transportation. For that price range, we can get a really crappy sailboat or a decent camper. Also, I think that traveling overland provides a greater opportunity to interact with native people and provides a more culturally diverse experience. So, we are currently in the soft market for a 24 foot-ish RV. I say soft market because we still need our cars to keep working and saving for another 18 months. I constantly remind myself that Life is for Living not paying bills!t.
